SEROTONIN SYNDROME -
A more serious and toxic side effect that may be seen with a variety of medications from the drug class selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Examples of trade name products, which fall into this drug class, include Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox, and Celexa. Serotonin syndrome is characterized by an altered mental status (e.g. agitation, delirium, coma), autonomic dysfunction (e.g. salivation, sweating, hyperthermia, tachycardia, dilated pupils, fluctuations in blood pressure), and neuromuscular abnormalities (e.g. tremor, rigidity, myoclonus, seizures). Although serotonin syndrome may in rare cases result in death, most patients recover completely with general supportive care within 24 to 72 hours.
