RETICULOENDOTHELIAL SYSTEM - A system composed of monocytes and macrophages located in reticular connective tissue (e.g. spleen). These cells are responsible for engulfing (phagocytosis) and removing cellular debris, old cells, pathogens, and foreign substances from the bloodstream.
