PULMONARY CONTUSION - A bruise to the lung itself. Often the result of a blunt force applied to the chest wall. A serious pulmonary contusion can also occur in the absence of a rib fracture, or any obvious external chest wall trauma. In the case of a significant pulmonary contusion, a cough progressing to shortness of breath develops within 6-8 hours after the injury.
