PREMATURITY - An infant might be considered "premature" if any one of the following exist: 1) infant was less than 34 weeks gestation at the time of birth; 2) infant was born prior to 36 weeks gestation and required special respiratory care after birth; 3) infant was born prior to 40 weeks gestation and required heart or lung surgery within 1 week of birth.
