PLACENTA - A vascular structure that is developed about the third month of pregnancy and attached to the inner lining of the uterus. Through it the fetus is supplied with nourishment and oxygen. The fetus also rids of waste products via the placenta. In normal labor it is expelled within an hour of the birth of the child.
