MENINGOCOCCEMIA - A serious for of sepsis where there is the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis circulating in the bloodstream. Symptoms and findings include a high fever, chills, petechial rash (looks like ruptured blood vessels), shock, and a changing or decreased level of consciousness. Treatment requires hospitalization and aggressive intravenous antibiotic therapy. Ventilatory support and blood pressure support is also needed in most cases.
