MELATONIN - A natural hormone produced by the pineal gland, a pea-sized organ at the center of the brain. Due to a recent popularity at the health food stores, this supplement has been touted to be a treatment for cataracts, AIDS, jet lag, aging, Alzheimer's, diabetes, schizophrenia, and epilepsy (to name a few). Currently, the only strong scientific evidence supporting it's effectiveness relates to the use of melatonin for insomnia and jet lag. Although it has a variety of effects in the body, controlled scientific studies which demonstrate effectiveness for the variety of other purported disorders are still pending.
