MAMMOGRAPHY - A specially designed x-ray for imaging the breast tissue in the early detection of breast cancer. Studies show over 90% of breast cancers can be demonstrated by mammography. This low-radiation x-ray of the breast is particularly effective in the detection of breast cancer in women over age 50. Current recommendations include annual mammography for women over age 50. In women with a family history for breast cancer or other risk factors, mammography may be appropriate before age 50.
