KERNIG'S SIGN - A physical examination finding that can indicate inflammation of the meninges (meningitis); with the subject lying flat on the back, the hip is flexed (at about a 45 degree angle to the trunk), at this point passive extension of the knee joint is met with pain and contraction of the muscles (hamstrings) in the posterior thigh.
