INTERFERON - A natural protein effective against almost every known virus. When the genetic core (DNA or RNA) of a virus invades a cell, it triggers off the cell's defense production of interferon. Research is directed at an artificial inducer to make interferon available before a viral attack, or facilitate cellular production of larger amounts of interferon.
