INTERCOSTAL RETRACTIONS - This is a important finding on examination in those who are experiencing difficulty breathing due to obstructive lung disease (e.g. COPD, bronchiolitis, asthma). During inhalation the soft tissues (and muscles) between the ribs appears to collapse inwards and then expand outward during exhalation. This is an important finding in asthmatic children and indicates the patient will require medical intervention.
