HYPOTHERMIA - A condition that is characterized by abnormally low body temperature, often seen in newborns or the elderly. Defined as a core (rectal) temperature less than 35 degrees Celsius or 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Some medications (e.g. sedatives, phenothiazines) can increase the risk for this disorder. Active rewarming (warm blankets, warm IV fluids) is the emergent form of treatment.
