HYALINE MEMBRANE DISEASE - A respiratory disease of the newborn. Often associated with prematurity or maternal diabetes. This disorder is characterized by a lack of pulmonary surfactant, a substance which increases pulmonary compliance, and prevents collapse of the pulmonary air sacs.
