GLUCAGON - A hormone that is produced by the alpha islet cells of the pancreas. Glucagon stimulates the liver to release glucose (from glycogen) between meals. Glucagon also increases the release of the amino acid alanine from muscle tissue and the release of fatty acids from adipose tissue. Blood levels of glucagon may be increased in cases of glucagon-secreting tumors.
