FACTOR II -
A protein which is synthesized by the liver. Fibrinogen (factor I) is converted to fibrin, in the formation of a blood clot, via the enzymatic action of thrombin. A fibrinogen assay measures the concentration of fibrinogen in the blood and may be used to evaluate abnormal blood clotting. A lack of fibrinogen may be congenital or acquired. A condition known as DIC results in the excessive utilization and depletion of fibrinogen.
