ENKEPHALINS - Opioid peptides originally isolated from the brain but now found in many parts of the body. These substances act in a similar mechanism to opiates by binding to opiate receptors in the brain. Endorphins (alpha and beta) cannot only vary in their physical and chemical properties but also in their physiologic effects in the body. Pentapeptide endorphins are referred to as enkephalins.
