EMPHYSEMA - A lung disease that is characterized by the loss of lung elasticity, rupture of the alveoli, and the eventual impairment of cardiac function. Smoking is the number one cause of emphysema in the United States. Complications include pneumonia and hypoxemia (low oxygen in the blood), requiring the chronic use of supplemental oxygen.
