D AND C - D & C is the abbreviation for the gynecological procedure, dilatation and curettage. In this procedure, the cervix (opening to the uterus) is dilated so a surgical curette may be passed into the uterus. The physician uses the curette to remove the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium). This procedure is often performed to correct dysfunctional uterine bleeding.
