CONSTIPATED - There is a wide range of what could be considered normal bowel function. Most people have 1 to 2 bowel movements per day, while others have as many as 4 or 5 per day, and are still considered normal. Normal adult Americans have on average no less than 3 bowel movements per week. Some people may only have a bowel movement every few days. Constipation should be defined as a longer than normal interval between stools, taking into consideration your normal daily bowel habits. Many experts consider fewer than two bowel movements per week meeting the criteria for constipation ("or being constipated").
