CALCITONIN LEVEL - Calcitonin is a hormone that is secreted by the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland. The normal calcitonin blood level is 0 to 50 pg/ml (picograms per ml). Elevations of the calcitonin level may be seen in thyroid cancer, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, and multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) II. A venipuncture specimen is required for this test.
