BILIRUBIN - A pigment that is largely derived from the breakdown of hemoglobin. That which is derived from the breakdown of red blood cells is known as indirect bilirubin. Bilirubin that has been chemically altered in the liver to make it water-soluble is called direct bilirubin. Total bilirubin includes direct and indirect bilirubin.
