BENZODIAZEPINES - A large family of medications that act as both sedatives and hypnotics. Can cause drowsiness and the inability to remember an incident while under the influence of the medication. Useful in the treatment of anxiety, seizure disorders, and insomnia. Can cause addiction and drug withdrawal after long-term use. Examples include these trade names: Valium, Librium, Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, Tranxene, and Dalmane.
