BASAL SKULL FRACTURE - A fracture involving the base of the cranium. This fracture is often difficult to detect clinically. Finding may include raccoon eyes, Battle's sign, hemotympanum, and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea. Plain skull films will often not reveal basal skull fracture, making the CT scan (or MRI) the most reliable diagnostic study.
