ACID FAST ORGANISMS - A special sputum culture which is used to detect tuberculosis due to their unique staining characteristics. After acid staining a sputum specimen (produced by coughing) is viewed under a microscope. The presence of acid fast organisms is diagnostic for tuberculosis.
